JSPL produces economical and efficient steel and power through backward and forward
integration. It has mining capacity of over 9.41 MTPA of coal and iron ore at various locations within
India and abroad. Owning captive mines has ensured the company of uninterrupted supply of high quality
raw material. This has reduced the dependency on third party thereby resulting in cost and time
saving.
To mitigate the negative impact of mining on the environment the company has been carefully
preparing its mining plans. Air and water quality, noise and other environmental parameters are
monitored regularly and maintained well within permissible limits.CSR activities around mining areas
are undertaken to address the socio-economic needs of the local communities.

Tensa, Odisha, India
The company’s iron ore mine at Tensa has been declared as the best mine by the Director General
of Mines Safety, Government of India. The mine at Tensa, Odisha partially fulfill the company’s
requirement of iron ore for producing sponge iron.
As part of JSPL’s backward integration plans to make the company self reliant in iron ore,
Tensa mine ensures consistency in the quality of ore used in sponge iron kilns. Equipped with fully
mechanised techniques, it currently produces about 3.11 MTPA of iron ore. For environmental and
mineral conservation considerations, all the iron ore fines mined and generated in the mining process
are utilised for sinter making at its Raigarh plant n Chhattisgarh.
Kiepersol Colliery, South Africa, Africa
The company operates the Kiepersol Colliery in the Mpumalanga province and is currently mining 1.20
MTPA of coal. The mine produces high quality anthracite for both the domestic and international
metallurgical coal markets. Kiepersol coal mine has more than 25-year lifespan with almost 50 million
tonnes of coal resources.
The anthracite from Kiepersol has low sulphur and phosphorous content, which gives the mine a
preferred supplier status for leading Ferro alloys manufacturers in South Africa and abroad, including
customers from the Middle East, India, Europe and China. The company possesses railway siding, which
forms the bulk of Kiepersol’s infrastructure, enabling the mine to dispatch orders directly to
customers and to ports for exports. Further areas adjacent to the existing mine have been acquired,
which will increase the resources and the life of mine.
Chirodzi, Mozambique, Africa
Open cast coal mining is currently underway with the first export having taken place on May 2013 of
36000 metric tonnes. It has commenced commercial production of coking and thermal coal from the
Chirodzi Mine, thus becoming the third major company to start coal production in Mozambique.
It has commenced successful trial run of the washery in March 2013. The current production capacity
is of 3 MTPA with plans of expanding it to 15 MTPA in the next phase.
New South Wales, Australia
The company has acquired majority stake in Wollongong Coal Limited, an ASX lisited company. It
has two operating underground coking coal mines in New South Wales, Australia with reserves of over
180 MT and one of the six shareholders operating coal terminal at Port embla.
The total capacity of the mine is 3 MTPA and the company’s present production is around 2.10
MTPA. The long term plan is to increase the mining capacity to 6 MTPA. The strategic advantage of the
mine includes rich coal reserves; easy mining conditions, close port access and labor proximity.
